Why I Moved to Dubai as a Software Engineer

Why I chose Dubai — what the city's tech scene offers, how I settled in, and what I've learned building a career here.

I relocated to Dubai to level up professionally and personally. It was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating — here's what I've learned building a life and career in the city.

The Decision

I wasn't escaping anything. I had a good job, good friends, a comfortable routine. But comfort was exactly the problem. I felt myself plateauing—professionally and personally.

Dubai offered something I needed: disruption. A new environment, new challenges, new perspectives.

The Tech Scene Here

Dubai's tech ecosystem surprised me. It's younger and scrappier than I expected. There's a hunger here, a willingness to try things that more established markets might dismiss.

The diversity is remarkable. In any given meeting, you might have five nationalities represented. This brings friction, yes, but also creativity. Solutions emerge that wouldn't in more homogeneous environments.

What I've Gained

Perspective. Building a career in Dubai surfaces how many of your assumptions are cultural, not universal.

Resilience. Everything is harder when you're new—banking, housing, making friends. But harder builds stronger.

Network. Expat communities are tight. People help each other because everyone remembers being new.

"Sometimes you need to lose yourself to find a better version."

The Tradeoffs

I miss seasons. I miss old friends who knew me before. I miss being able to navigate without GPS.

But I don't miss who I was becoming—comfortable, unchallenged, slowly calcifying.
